DESCRIPTION
The International Water Management Institute (IWMI) has an exciting opportunity for a Research Officer – Water Resources to work on various projects within and outside Nepal to contribute to monitoring and modeling of watershed hydrology, climate change analysis, and research/evidence-based capacity development of civil society, provincial and local governments, and farmers on water resources management.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Contribute to the study on watershed interventions in the project-specific geographic region.
- Contribute to the fieldwork planning and evidence gathering related to hydrology, agricultural water management, and integrated water resources management in IWMI’s project areas in Nepal and/or other countries.
- Assist in setting up hydrological and climate monitoring stations in the study watersheds.
- Assist in collecting and managing hydrological and climate data from the study watersheds.
- Apply hydrological models (e.g., Soil and Water Assessment Tool [SWAT]) to simulate the impacts of climate change, land-use change and water-use patterns on the basin flow regime.
- Perform other relevant hydrological and water resource analyses as required by projects, and prepare reports on these analyses.
- Assist in developing capacity building materials and data analysis tools in suitable programming languages such as R, Python, etc., as required.
- Train and support local staff from partner organizations in data collection techniques.
- Coordinate with local and regional partners in planning field visits and other knowledge forums/workshops organized by IWMI’s office in Nepal.
- Travel within and outside Nepal to support relevant project activities on the ground.
- Work closely with local partner organizations, and play a key communication and coordination role between partners.
- Provide support to preparing communication materials of IWMI’s work in Nepal.
- Provide support to increasing the visibility of IWMI through the preparation of articles for publication in local newspapers, and by participating in local knowledge forums.
- Arrange the logistics for site visits by IWMI and other international project partners.
REQUIREMENTS
MINIMUM EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:
- Master’s degree in hydrology/hydrogeology, water resources or a closely related field.
- Knowledge on water sector development issues of Nepal and/or other countries.
- Minimum of 2 years of post-qualifying experience in natural resource management or water resources management.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Knowledge of catchment-scale hydrological models such as SWAT.
- Knowledge of ecosystem services modeling is an advantage.
- Knowledge of computer programming languages such as FORTRAN, R, Python, etc., is an advantage.
- Working knowledge of ArcGIS.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, database management and PowerPoint design.
- Good interpersonal skills.
- Well-developed personal organization and priority setting skills.
- Good written and verbal communication skills in English.
- Ability to function independently.
- Ability to deliver on time.
- Ability to interact effectively with officials in other agencies.
- Ability to travel to remote areas on extended field trips.
- Sensitive on diversity/inclusion and gender issues of Nepal.
- Respect and practice organizational values and work with professional integrity.

The duration of the contract will be for a three-year period with the possibility of extension based on performance and availability of funds.
