bRisk: Building research capacity for prevention and control of non-communicable disease risk factors in Nepalese population

Background

Non-communicable diseases and their risk factors are a rising burden in Nepal. The brick project in leadership of Kathmandu Medical College Public Limited (KMCPL) along with other two leading health institutions of Nepal and Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health will develop a result oriented plan to build a critical mass of professional skilled to undertake research on prevention and control of non-communicable diseases in Nepalese population. The project will develop a comprehensive research training program plan to enhance Nepal’s research capacity on epidemiology, surveillance, prevention and control of conventional and emerging NCD risk factors.

Objectives of research training planning program

The overall objective of the project is to develop a comprehensive research training program plan for enhancing research capacity for prevention and control of NCD risk factors in Nepal. The specific aims of the program planning are:

Research Officer

Responsibilities of Research Officer

  • To develop and test data collection tools
  • Submission of ethics review committee applications
  • Data collection: desk review, Focus Group Discussions, In-depth interviews
  • Qualitative data coding and statistical analysis
  • Organizing planning and review workshops
  • Update the Steering Committee about the progress of the project
  • Communication with partners and stakeholders involved in the planning process
  • To assist Research administrator with financial and logistic part  of the project
  • Miscellaneous other project - related tasks

Selection Criteria of Research Officer

  • The RO should have minimum qualification of Masters in Public Health disciplines
  • He/she should be with at least a 2 years of working experience in the field of public health, preferably in Noncommunicable disease
  • He/she should have experience in conducting qualitative research (tool preparation, data collection, data transcription, coding and analysis)
  • He/she should have at least one publication of qualitative research
  • He/she should have good personal, social and emotional skills with high level of working ethics
  • He/she should be well versed with the different qualitative tools like focus group discussions, key informants interview etc. including basic computer and data analyses skills; have sound knowledge of research methodology 

Travel

The RO shall be based in Kathmandu Medical College Public Limited,Sinamangal and Duwakot. As and when needed, the RO will travel outside Kathmandu for data collection.

Remuneration

This is a full time employment position with per month salary of Rupees 62, 000. There shall not be additional allowances for meetings, local transportation and communication. Income tax will be deducted as per rule of the Government of Nepal.

Terms/Duration

  • The term of the RO shall begin from October 15, 2019.
  • The tenure shall continue until the end of the project 14.09.2020
  • The RO can discontinue with a prior notice of 1 month.
  • Termination of the term can take place if he/she
  • Fails to repeatedly contribute towards the project despite repeated reminders.
  • Shows lack of professionalism involving, e.g. breach of confidentiality.
  • Principal Investigator holds the final decision on matters related to continuing of tenure, resignation, etc of the RO.

Research Administrator

Responsibilities of Research Administrative

  • Facilitate the partnership collaboration among the partners at all levels during all activities of the project
  • Periodical monitoring of the progress by tasks, budget, and deliverables by time line and take necessary actions.
  • Identify the administrative, logistical, technical requirements and make provision as needed
  • Maintain all the important documents (soft and hard copies).
  • Maintain and regularize the financial and other records of the project
  • Maintain financial reports to NIH
  • Assist Research Officer during desk review, qualitative data collection and analysis
  • Organizing planning and review workshops
  • Organizing consultation meeting with related national experts

Selection Criteria of Research Administrative

  • The RA should have minimum qualification of Bachelors in health science topics, preferably with Masters in Public Health.
  • He/she should have least a 2 years experience of project management (planning, monitoring and evaluation skills)
  • He/she should have skill to lead the financial and logistics part of the project.
  • He/she should have good personal, social and emotional skills with high level of working ethics
