Institute of Himalayan Risk Reduction (IHRR) is an organization established with an objective to assess and understand the risk to contribute to sustainability. Complying with the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction(SFDRR), IHRR envisions to understand the risk and application of interdisciplinary knowledge with Science, Engineering, Technology and Innovation to contribute for risk reduction and bridging of academic research with professionals and policymakers for sustainability. The team consists of professionals with expertise and experiences in the field of disaster risk management in understanding the risk, conducting academic research, and field-level implementations in Nepal and different parts of the world.

Job Summary: 
The intern will be responsible to assist the team members to achieve the desired results.

Key responsibility: 

  • Assist the Program Officer in necessary data compilation and project implementation-related activities. 
  • Assist the program officer to pilot and manage Technologies in DRR related activities not limited to the use of open data, GIS, Drones, Virtual reality in different DRR preparedness and management-related initiatives. 
  • Carry out GIS mapping (particularly risk, hazard, and vulnerability mapping) at a local level integrating data from several heterogeneous sources. 
  • Assist the project team in designing training materials and organizing different DRR related training and capacity-building exercises. 
  • Contribute to the handling and managing of Open-Source Data Inventory of IHRR. 
  • Closely work with the technology development team in translating the project requirements into a technical document that is easily understandable for the technical team. 
  • Proper documentation and data management for all activities and projects where they are engaged/involved. 
  • Involve in data collection activities both secondary and field-based primary data collection as per the needs of the project. 
  • Stay updated with DRR related plans and policies, new innovative initiatives, and frontier technologies on DRR related interventions.
  • Timely and quality delivery of the project activities including training, workshop, and support to the targeted community and individual.
  • Proposal Preparation, Documentation, generation of appropriate knowledge product as per the project plan, and results frameworks, and reporting to the partner organization and donor agency according to the agreed standards and timely manner. 
  • Support and facilitate the team in collecting the project progress, challenges, and opportunities and reporting to the partner organization regularly. 
  • Ensure practice is established for a reflective learning environment within a project team, and organization and functioning of strong and effective teamwork.

1. Position Overview

The Program Coordinator will be responsible for establishing and leading the organization’s interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary portfolio in health, mental health, nutrition, and disaster preparedness and response. This is a newly created position aimed at strategically expanding the organization’s thematic areas.

The coordinator will identify opportunities, design and implement innovative programs, and build strategic partnerships that integrate public health, mental health, nutrition, disaster risk reduction, and community resilience. As a key team member, the position will also support day-to-day program coordination, donor engagement, and strategic positioning to establish the organization as a credible actor in these fields.

2. Key Responsibilities

A. Strategic Program Development

  • Lead the development of an interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary health and mental health portfolio, integrating elements of public health, nutrition, mental health, psychosocial support (MHPSS), and disaster preparedness/response.
  • Conduct situation analyses, stakeholder mapping, and opportunity scans to identify strategic entry points for new programming.
  • Develop strategic frameworks, thematic priorities, and innovative approaches aligned with national priorities and organizational strategy.
  • Build partnerships and networks with government agencies, academic institutions, NGOs, and development partners to foster cross-sectoral collaboration.
  • Monitor funding opportunities and lead the preparation of concept notes and strategic proposals in consultation with senior management.

B. Program Coordination & Implementation

  • Coordinate interdisciplinary pilot programs and activities in health, mental health, and disaster response.
  • Organize and facilitate workshops, training, and community engagement events that involve professionals from multiple disciplines.
  • Ensure effective documentation, reporting, and knowledge sharing across sectors and teams.
  • Monitor progress of initiatives and identify opportunities for cross-sectoral learning and scale-up.

C. Business Development & Resource Mobilization

  • Lead the development of proposals, budgets, and concept notes for donors and partners with a focus on integrated, multisectoral programming.
  • Contribute to donor mapping, strategic positioning, and external engagement to secure sustainable funding.
  • Support advocacy and representation in relevant national and international forums, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches.

D. Disaster Response & Preparedness

  • Support the integration of health and mental health in disaster preparedness and emergency response, including coordination with relevant clusters and stakeholders.
  • Participate in emergency response planning and implementation, ensuring interdisciplinary perspectives are incorporated and document lessons learned.

E. Office Coordination & Administration

  • Oversee day-to-day program office functions including logistics, scheduling, and reporting.
  • Ensure effective communication and coordination between program, operations, and finance teams.
  • Maintain updated records, data, and documentation relevant to emerging interdisciplinary program areas.

3. Required Qualifications & Experience

  • Education:
    • Minimum of Bachelor degree in Nursing, Nutrition, Social Sciences, or related field (Masters in similar field preferred)
  • Experience:
    • Minimum 2 years of experience in NGOs, preferably in program development, interdisciplinary health programming, mental health, nutrition, or disaster response.
    • Demonstrated experience in proposal writing, research, donor engagement, and program design.
    • Commitment to humanitarian principles, gender equity, and community-centered approaches.
  • Skills:
    • Strong understanding of interdisciplinary approaches in health and development.
    • Strategic thinking, communication, and facilitation skills.
    • Proposal writing and documentation skills.
    • Proficiency in MS Office packages.
    • Fluency in English and Nepali.
