DAI seeks an Illustrator/Graphic Designer for the USAID Paani Program. The Illustrator/Graphic Designer will create approximately 15-20 illustrations/graphics of hydropower, irrigation and road construction schemes labeled with appropriate terminology, watershed or river basin diagrams, advocacy, etc. The Illustrator/Graphic Designer will also develop a professional layout for the guidelines that follows USAID branding and marking requirements.

Detail Scope of Work

Position:  Illustrator/Graphic Designer

Level of Effort:  On/about March 1,2020 – May 1, 2020 (60 days)

Base of Operations:  Kathmandu 

Background:

The Paani Program—also known in Nepali as the “USAID Water Project”, युएसएडपानीपरियोजना—is a 5 year, $25 million USAID-funded Project in Nepal. Water is the single most important natural resource underpinning Nepal’s economy and livelihoods. The sustainable management of water resources in Nepal depends on addressing climate change and protecting healthy, biodiverse ecosystems. Paani aims to enhance Nepal’s ability to manage water resources for multiple uses and users through climate change adaptation and the conservation of freshwater biodiversity. Paani employs an integrated, whole-of-basin approach with activities under four “intermediate result” (IR) areas at the watershed, river basin, and national scales, to reduce threats to freshwater biodiversity and strengthen the resilience of targeted human and ecological communities in the Karnali, Mahakali, and Rapti river basins through improved water management. This will be accomplished through11strategic approaches and four intermediate results (each with several sub-IRs), and supporting activities, as defined in Section C, Statement of Work (SOW) of the Paani Contract, Annual Work Plans, and a Monitoring and Evaluation Plan.  These documents, as revised periodically, provide the framework and overall guidance for all Paani team members.

Purpose:

Paani is finalizing the production of a bilingual guide to healthy rivers, climate resilience, and sustainable hydropower for civil society organizations (CSOs), which aims to strengthen civil society voices and increase their awareness on advocating for sustainable infrastructure in their communities. The CSO guidelines cover background/basic terminology, case studies, environmental impacts and advocacy on three main areas of infrastructure: hydropower, irrigation and road construction. The English version of the guidelines has been completed, and the content is being translated into Nepali. 

Paani is now seeking an Illustrator/Graphic Designer to create approximately 15-20 illustrations/graphics representing aspects of the above, including, but not limited to: illustrations/diagrams of hydropower, irrigation and road construction schemes labeled with appropriate terminology, watershed or river basin diagrams, advocacy, etc. The Illustrator/Graphic Designer will also develop a professional layout for the guidelines that follows USAID branding and marking requirements. 

The consultant will work closely withPaani’sSenior Communications Specialist, Communications Manager and Technical Editor – Knowledge Products (short term), to ensure that the illustrations/graphics cover the technical areas of the guidelines in a clear, professional and visually attractive way, along with the layout. 

Tasks:

Under the guidance and supervision of the Senior Communications Specialist and in coordination with the Technical Editor – Knowledge Products and Communications Officer, the Illustrator will:

  • Develop 15-20 pictorial illustrations related to hydropower, irrigation, and road construction showing aspects of sustainable and environment friendly development for non-technical audience
  • Design illustrations or graphics related to watershed or river basin health and/or community level engagement on advocacy related activities. Ensure the illustrations are GESI (Gender and Social Inclusion) sensitive and projects their representation. 
  • Use pictures and texts provided by communications team as necessary to the different section of CSO guide
  • Design a layout and color scheme for the CSO guidelines that take into consideration USAID branding and marking requirements

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree and at least three years of experience illustrating or designing compelling graphics for similar donor-funded projects
  • Ability to understand technical data in English and translate it into visually attractive, easily understood illustrations/graphics
  • Able to work and complete designs on short notice
  • Familiar with adherence to donor branding guidelines, preferably USAID 
  • Strong interpersonal skills, able to communicate and work with diverse people in English and Nepali
  • Proficient in English (writing, reading and speaking)

Level of Effort and Timeline:

The Illustrator/Graphic Designer position will be based in Kathmandu, the level of effort (LOE) is up to 60 days between March 1 – May 1, 2020.
