Qualitative Survey of Managing Risk for Economic Development (MRED) Phase II - Nepal

MERCY CORPSOVERVIEW

Mercy Corps is a leading global organization powered by the belief that a better world is possible. In disaster, in hardship, in more than 40 countries around the world, we partner to put bold solutions into action — helping people triumph over adversity and build stronger communities from within. Now, and for the future.

Mercy Corps started operations in Nepal in 2005.  Since then the agency has been working in some of the most challenging areas to improve the lives of vulnerable individuals and communities across Nepal.  That goal is attained through a systems based approach to market development, financial services, Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR), climate change adaptation and youth engagement through the lens of gender equity and social inclusion.

Every year Nepal faces flooding and landslides triggered by heavy rain during the monsoon season. These disasters cause catastrophic losses in agricultural land, property, and loss of life for local communities. To mitigate the effect of these disasters, the Managing Risk through Economic Development (MRED) program is testing an innovative “nexus” approach that combines traditional community-based disaster risk reduction (DRR) approaches with economic and market development interventions. MRED piloted the innovative “nexus” model to integrate disaster risk reduction (DRR) and market systems development, in an effort to incentivize sustainable DRR activities while giving vulnerable communities an opportunity to increase their incomes.

Research and learning are central to the MRED program. MRED has thus far conducted household surveys to evaluate the impact of its “nexus” model on community disaster readiness, household resilience capacities, and overall well being outcome to build disaster resilient communities. These efforts seek to generate concrete evidence on characteristics of a disaster-resilient community and how households in the MRED communities exercise their resilience capacities to cope, respond to, and adapt in the face of shocks and stressors. Building on this research and learning portfolio, MRED will conduct a qualitative research study to examine communities' experience of the “nexus” model in MRED implementation areas.
