HKI/Nepal is working to improve the nutritional status of women and young children through evidence based research and programs. Helen Keller International (HKI), CARE, FHI 360, Nepali Technical Assistance Group (NTAG), Equal Access Nepal (EAN), Environment and Public Health Organization (ENPHO), Vijaya Resource development Centre (VDRC) is implementing USAID funded Suaahara II Program (SP II) in 40 districts, applications are invited from interested, committed, dynamic team players and experienced Nepali nationals for the following position:

Homestead Food Production Officer

(Jajarkot)

The HFP Officer will responsible for ensuring the quality of annual planning, implementation and outcomes of the homestead food production component of the health and nutrition program, providing nutrient-dense animal and vegetable source foods to pregnant and lactating women and children.  The position will provide technical and logistical support for the interventions and activities at district level and with the partner NGOs for the technical management of homestead gardens and backyard poultry at beneficiary level.  

  • Work closely with the district coordinator and thematic manager to prepare detailed district implementation plans for the HFP; 
  • Ensure that all HFP field activities are implemented in accordance with the plan of action and project timeframe; 
  • Coordinate HFP field activities with government and partner NGOs and assist with the development of linkages between district agriculture officers and district health and nutrition officers for the integration of HFP and ENA components; 
  • Assist HFP groups and VMFs to register with DADO and DLSO to gain access to regular technical advice and a range of resources so they become a local contact point for agriculture and livestock extension workers, which can facilitate the promotion of HFP across the districts.
  • Assist VMFs to develop new skills to meet the needs of HFP group members for technical assistance, including encouraging VMFs to specialize in certain services such as integrated pest management, water harvesting, poultry, fruit production, or post-harvest processing. 
  • Facilitate and promote the organization of quarterly Newcastle disease vaccination campaigns for backyard poultry on a fee-for-service basis in close collaboration with the DLSO and identified private enterprises. SP2 will strengthen DLSO capacity to monitor and respond to disease outbreaks. See below for the role of private partnerships in this activity.
  • BSc in Agriculture, Livestock or Related Field; 
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in agriculture field with I/NGOs; 
  • Strong knowledge of Nepal’s agriculture systems, policies and processes and a sound understanding of the linkages between agriculture and nutrition; 
  • Excellent interpersonal and facilitation skills and mentoring of staff partners; 
  • A solid understanding of monitoring and evaluation of homestead food production programs; 
  • Good networking skills with central and district stakeholders;
  •  
  • Experience with agriculture related training and facilitation skill 
  • Willing to travel to rural settings frequently
