Location: Kathmandu, with extensive travel and field work (approx. 30%)

Salary Range: 40,000-50,000 Rupees per Month (Depending upon experience)

The Nepal Monitor Project is recruiting a Documentation and Protection Officer. This staff member will be an integral part of our work creating a community that effectively engages in joint activities to protect and promote human rights, crossing societal divisions. Key to this role is the development and management of our legal aid and protection services for survivors of violence and human rights defenders, especially women and girls and members of marginalized minority communities. This new, developing part of our work to support the rule of law and social inclusion in Nepal will include the provision of legal, psycho-social and socio-economic support to survivors of violence.

Responsibilities

• Lead on legal and socio-economic programming to support survivors of violence, including creating robust systems for assessing need, allocating resources and reviewing and documenting ongoing cases.
• Be first point of contact for survivors of violence and offer consistently sensitive, empathetic and professional support
• Build and maintain a strong network of lawyers and relevant service providers e.g. medical professionals, livelihood providers, schools etc. as well as relevant government authorities in the field
• Undertake primary data collection to support the documentation of incidents and preparation of legal cases
• Develop and maintain assessment criteria for the selection and prioritization of COCAP legal aid and socio-economic support and document inquiries, applications, decisions taken and resources expended.
• Work with survivors, family and other responsible agencies to assess needs, identity appropriate support services and refer cases
• Work with survivors, family and Human Rights Defenders to assess risk and develop protection strategies
• Lead on the sensitive documentation and management of case data and design effective systems for monitoring and evaluating learning and impact across Legal Aid activities
• Assist in development of reports and submissions to relevant national and international authorities on specific cases and key issues and trends 
• Travel extensively throughout the country, including remote areas, to engage , and strengthen the Nepal Monitor network (approximately 1/3 of the working time will be in the field)
• Work closely with the Human Rights Mapping Coordinator, the Training and Outreach Officer and the Project Coordinator in order to ensure strong communication and strategic coherence across all components of the project
• Assist further conceptual development of the project 

Your profile 

• You have at least 2 years of work experience in a related field around Nepal and extensive knowledge and experience of the Nepali legal system and facilities and resources for survivor support.
• You have strong skills in supporting people affected by violence  and are capable of working professionally to managing sensitive and complex data about specific cases
• You have an Undergraduate and ideally a Master’s degree or comparable qualifications in Law or another relevant field e.g. Human Rights, Child Protection, Social Work
• You are interested in protection and security management, especially as relating to Human Rights Defenders
• You are willing to work in a complex political and socio-cultural environment and are open and able to undertake extensive travel, including visits to remote areas
• You have strong communication and conflict resolutions skills and enjoy working as part of a team
• You possess outstanding written and spoken English and Nepali skills, including the capacity to produce detailed and professional reports 
• You are committed to Human Rights and Gender Equality and the role of civil society in promoting them
• You are willing and able to abide by strict security protocols, including the use of security software, and will respect the confidentiality of PBI, COCAP, and all of their contacts 
• You are competent in using Microsoft Office 
• You are a citizen of Nepal 

Contract Duration: The initial contract will be 2 years, based in Kathmandu with frequent field visits, beginning November 2018

Salary: The salary range (depending upon experience) will be 40,000-50,000NRs per month with additional yearly increments and bonuses.

Collective Campaign for Peace (COCAP) is a national network of 43 peace and   human rights non-governmental organizations from 29 different districts of Nepal. It started as a loose, informal forum in June 2001 and was registered with the government of Nepal as a non-profit, non-political network in December 2002. It aims to provide a common space for its members, volunteers and friends to collectively engage in the pursuit for peace, human rights and justice in Nepal.
