Company Description

SNV Netherlands Development Organisation is a not-for-profit international development organisation. SNV has been working in Nepal since 1980 and is active in Agriculture, Renewable Energy and Water, Sanitation and Hygiene.

SNV is seeking qualified Nepalese for Enumerator position (4)  to assist with qualitative research, transcription, and translation for an evaluation of rural sanitation programs.

BACKGROUND

The purpose of this research will be to better understand the implementation of rural sanitation service delivery modalities delivered through the SSH4A approach in selected counties. Methods may include in-depth interviews with stakeholders such as local government or partner organizations and focus group discussions with beneficiaries living in rural villages. Field staff will be imperative to data collection and achieving the aims of this work. 

Job Description

The following outlines the details of what is expected:

  1. Working in a team under the supervision of the field manager.
  2. Training in qualitative data collection methods, research ethics, research tool use, transcription, and translation. All must complete the whole 2-day training regardless of previous experience in qualitative methods or data collection.
  3. Pilot testing of research tools prior to official data collection.
  4. Providing feedback about the tools prior to use and throughout the data collection period.
  5. Conducting and notetaking in-depth interviews and focus group discussions according to the agreed-upon data collection schedule.
  6. Translating for English-speaking researcher and participants. Must speak fluent English and any additional local languages needed for data collection.
  7. Participating in daily debriefs (as determined by the field manager) with the research team to discuss and review data collection activities, transcribed data, and proposed implementation strategies.
  8.  Writing up notes on interviews and other observations.
  9. Transcribing all recorded interviews, discussions, and activities into word documents, Translating all transcribed data into English, and Reviewing transcriptions and translations for accuracy.
  10. Demonstrating flexibility in travel and work schedule.

Enumerators must be committed to research activities for a approximately of 3 weeks, beginning on March 5, 2020. 

Qualifications

  • Speaks Nepali fluently and can conduct activities in Nepali and preferable to those who can speak Maithili and Bhojpuri.
  • Speaks English fluently, and has strong written English skills.
  • Extensive experience with qualitative data collection (facilitating and notetaking FGDs and KIIs).
  • Experience in observations and note-taking.
  • Experience verbally translating between English and Nepali, preferred who can translate Maithili and Bhojpuri..
  • Experience using computers, including Microsoft office, and ability to organize, save, and share files.
  • Ability to listen to recordings and type words into a document word-for-word, or verbatim.
  • Ability to translate the transcribed information collected from Nepali into English, preferred who can do from Maithili and Bhojpuri to Nepali and English.
  • Access to their own personal computer OR to SNV computer for transcription.
  • Experience working on WASH research. Knowledge of rural sanitation service delivery and the SSH4A program is beneficial.
