Promoting Young Women in Employment in Pokhara (PYWEP)
Right4Children (R4C) is a Pokhara-based NGO dedicated in improving the lives and living standards of disadvantaged children, youth and their families. Established in January 2013, R4C's actions are oriented towards assisting such children and young people, through the programs and services that they feel RIGHT for them, in making their hopes and dreams come true. R4C is implementing 3 years long Promoting Young Women in Employment in Pokhara (PYWEP) project in partnership with Plan International Nepal. PYWEP project is being implemented in Pokhara Valley. The overall goal of the project is increased decent wage employment for migrant young women in Pokhara. The economic empowerment of young women is pivotal to gender equality. Decent work, in particular, for both women and men enable them to build more fulfilling and promising futures for themselves, their families, and their communities. Gender norms, values and roles, greatly influence young women’s access to decent work.
Currently project has completed half of way and trained almost 290 participants in different occupations as per the recommendation of the Labor Market Assessment and Rapid Market Assessment conducted in 2019. The COVID-19 pandemic first wave began from 2020 January in Nepal and changed the context drastically. The COVID-19 pandemic has led to a dramatic loss of human life worldwide and presents an unprecedented challenge to public health, food systems and the labor market. The economic and social disruption caused by the pandemic is devastating. All crucial sectors like banking, education, aviation, hospitality and tourism were severely impacted by the COVID and is still continued as 2nd wave with new variant started from April 2021.Since the project was heavily focused on tourism and related sectors with focus on wage employment, now with the changing context and many sectors being impacted by the pandemic. With this backdrop, the project realized that the recommendation provided by earlier study may be relevant, may not be relevant.
Thus, project is seeking to procure the consultancy service to conduct a rapid market assessment for young women in Pokhara. One of the key characteristics of the labor market is that it is dynamic, it keeps on changing. It is very essential that the occupations in which skill development training, and on the Job (OJT) placement are done. The objective of the study is to evaluate the market in the realm of impact from COVID 19. The study should also identify new potential sectors offering better prospects/scope within current constraints of COVID situation (both wage employment as well as self-employment opportunities). The selection of occupations for training will be based on the recommendations and findings of this study. The study should ensure that thorough gender transformative and inclusion lens is incorporated in all areas.
