Shanti Volunteer Association (SVA), a Japanese NGO, was founded in 1981, and after devastating quake in April 2015, SVA Nepal Office was established and supported reconstruction and development of education project named,' Strengthening Resilience of Earthquake Affected Schools in Nuwakot and Rasuwa District". Since 2020, SVA has implemented two projects, “Project for Improvement of Community Library in Lalitpur, Syangja, Solukhumbu and Bardibas District and Promotion of Local Subject in Makawanpur District" under approval of the Social Welfare Council, and "Social and Behaviour Change Communication and Nutrition Sensitive literacy Component of National School Meals Programme in Nuwakot District" in partnership with World Food Program under approval of the Ministry of Education. Both are three-year projects and funded by the Government of Japan.

DETAILED JOB DESCRIPTION/REQUIREMENTS

SVA Nepal Office is implementing SBCC (Social Behavior Change and Communication) and NSL (Nutrition Sensitive Literacy) COMPONENT OF NATIONAL SCHOOL MEALS PROGRAMME IN NUWAKOT DISTRICT in agreement with WFP Nepal and partnership with local NGO, which will target entire 453 public schools and communities in all 12 Palika in the district for three years starting May 2020. SVA is looking for suitable candidate/consultancy firm for the position of Consultant-for Knowledge, Attitude and Practice (KAP) survey in Nuwakot district according to the Terms of Reference below. 

Position Title: Consultant

Duty Station: Kathmandu, Nepal

Working Field: Nuwakot, district

Duration: 3 months

Estimated Starting Date: Last week of September 2020

Type of Appointment: Consultant contract

Objective of the study:

  1. To measure the extent of a situation on Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH), food and nutritional habits among key stakeholders mainly children, teachers, parents, care givers and policy maker and to generate new tangents of a situation’s reality. 
  2. To establish the baseline (reference value) for use in future assessments and help measure the effectiveness of nutrition and WASH related activities ability to change behaviors and practices of the key stakeholders.  
  3. To suggest an intervention strategy that reflects specific local circumstances, cultural and factors that influence them, plan activities that are suitable to the context of project area.

Core Functions/Responsibilities:

  • Identify key areas of study and indicators of KAP on the basis of KAP questions (I) What are existing knowledge and practice with regard to adequate intake of diversified, locally available, hygienic food and WASH among children, their parents, and community members? (II) What are common barriers against intake of adequate diversified food at the household level and in school meals and WASH service provision? (III) Eating behaviors and WASH practices of respondents are optimal? and (IV) What are the enabling factors for such behavior and practices?
  • Develop and finalize data collection tools.
  • Submit an inception report including clear study design, methodology, data collection techniques and tools, stakeholder analysis, sample interview guides and questions, sample size, data analysis plan and timeline after the contract signing. 
  • Selection of key stakeholders for study and hold consultation meetings either in person or through ICT where feasible. 
  • Testing of data collection tools and revise tools after testing.
  • Orient and assign team members for data collection.
  • Perform data processing and analysis.
  • Upon completion of the tasks, provide the organization with a draft study report on the consultancy assignment and its outcomes.
  • Presentation of the draft study findings and submit final study report with data set. 

Required Qualifications and Experience:

Education

  • Advance university degree in Food and Nutrition or Public Health or Social Sciences or any other relevant disciplines 

Experience 

  • Prior experience of conducting KAP survey/study in the area of nutrition or WASH or education
  • Experience working with the officials of government institutions in Nepal
  • Knowledge of Municipal level Government structure
  • Excellent in statistical analysis and social research
  • Abilities to work under pressure and meet deadlines
  • Strong analytical, writing, editing and communication skills
  • Fluency in both written and spoken Nepali and English is required
