Communication and Knowledge Management Consultant

1. Background

Mercy Corps Nepal has been implementing DRR programs since 2007 in Nepal. The Community Based Disaster Risk Reduction model is practiced in most of the DRR projects. Mercy Corps Nepal is implementing Managing Risk through Economic Development (M-RED) program in 4 districts of far western Nepal - aiming to strengthen community resilience and response capacity since 2013. The key objective of MRED project is to minimize the toll of natural hazards and climate change on the socio economic wellbeing of smallholder farming communities in order to achieve resilience in the face of shock and stresses. 

Mercy Corps' Managing Risk through Economic Development (MRED) program came with a unique "NEXUS" approach – which is able to address both disaster risk reduction and at the same time enable communities to earn money to support their livelihood. "NEXUS" model has been effective to seek a sustainable way for integration of disaster risk reduction (DRR) and market systems development (MSD) approaches practiced around. This model gives special focus to small -scale activities and priorities that can incentivize sustainability of DRR activities and explore cash earning opportunities for vulnerable communities.

The Communications Consultant will support the knowledge management and learning activities of the MRED III project including developing, disseminating and managing all the project communications and knowledge content. S/he will work directly under the Program Manager and work in close coordination with the M&E team of MRED and the Country Communication focal point. S/he will support organizing, editing and managing all the knowledge resources produced by the MRED III team till date, simplify the technical document for general audience and develop web friendly version of the same. The position requires high quality writing and review skills to edit and develop project knowledge materials such as one pagers, infographics, case studies, project factsheets, success stories, etc. Additional skills and knowledge on multiple designing platforms will be an asset. Social media content creation and handling skills is required. 

2. Objectives

The overall objective of this SoW is to hire a consultant to develop, disseminate and manage all the project communication and knowledge contents. 

Specific objectives are as follow: 

  • Collect and manage the existing knowledge and communication resources
  • Prepare project factsheets, case studies and lessons learnt including infographics and explanatory pictorials and diagrams
  • Field visit and collect stories and evidence for wider sharing.

3. Project Area

The consultant will be based in Kathmandu with field visits to Kailali, Kanchanpur, Dadeldhura and Baitadi as required for story collection.

5. Qualification of the Consultant

To complete this task, the consultancy should have following experience and qualification;

  • Minimum Bachelor’s degree in Communication, Knowledge Management, Social Sciences, or related field. Master’s degree preferred.
  • Experience in communications and knowledge management is required and specially in disaster and resilience would be preferred
  • Experience in designing knowledge resources and communications ideas and products.
  • Social media writing and handling skills required.
  • Effectively disseminate the developed contents to a wider audience through various media and web platforms
  • Effective verbal & written communication skills in english, multi-tasking and prioritization skills. Fluency in written and spoken English and Nepali required
  • Effective writing and organizational skills for digital forums
  • Knowledge of local language and dialect (Hill and Terai)

6. Job Responsibilities:

  • The consultant will be responsible to manage all the communications and knowledge resources of MRED. S/he will need to work on existing documents in the first three months and will design idea for new materials which require field visits to collect photos, success and case stories, videos, interviews and experiences and develop quality communications content in the remaining three months.
  • Documentation and management of collected resources and developing infographics, diagrams and pictorials accordingly. 
  • Manage all resources as media resources and web based materials which can be shared in Mercy Corps website and MRED google site. 
  • H/She should have good command in English and Nepali and should be able to translate Nepali documents to English versions as necessary. 
  • To compile all information and develop briefs, factsheets and summaries accordingly. Developing communications pieces easily understandable by the general audience from reports and technical documents will be key.
  • Support in documenting the social media campaign for program activities (photographs and short video clips). And training of social media handling to staff.
  • Coordinate with graphic designers/editors and designing agencies to publish project knowledge and visibility content. This will include support in the final designing and publication of infographics, factsheets, briefs, videos as well as visibility contents like diaries, calendars, posters, bags, T-shirts, etc.
  • H/She will also support the M&E team as required.
    • Note: The candidate is required to perform at a very high level and his/her roles and responsibility will not only be limited to the roles/responsibility of this Scope of Work. Possibility of extension of the daily basis working days as per the requirement of the project and approval of the program manager.
  • Duration
    • Period of Contract: 6 Months Contract 17 May 2021 16 Nov 2021 (daily basis, per month 12 to 15 days)
