The FIND team is devoted to driving the development, clinical trialing, and early implementation of innovative diagnostic solutions that can have a high impact on patient care and disease control in low-resource settings.

Overall objective

FIND’s Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) Strategy aims to support technical and capacity solutions to tackle AMR through the identification of adapted diagnostics tests, strengthening laboratory and surveillance capacities and preserve new and existing antibiotics

The FIND AMR doctor will coordinate all activities related to the improvement of antibiotic prescription practices across different sites. Under the supervision of the project coordinator and the workstream lead, he will supervise the microbiologist activities related to improvement of clinical practices.

Responsibilities

The FIND AMR doctor will be based in Kenya and will report to the Country Coordinator. He or she will be working on different clinical sites, and responsibilities include:

  • Collaborate with the microbiologist to assess the overall flow from patient’s consultation, samples request, prescription of empirical treatment, reception of laboratory results their use and the adjustment of antibiotic prescription based on laboratory results
  • Evaluate of appropriate use of antibiotics (empirical and based on antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST))
  • Evaluate of the availability of tools to support prescriptions of antibiotics
  • Assess links and gaps between laboratory and clinicians and propose corrective actions in collaboration with the FIND microbiologist
  • Collaborate with FIND microbiologist to assess the availability and use of microbiology results and propose new tools, process that can bring any improvement in antibiotic prescriptions and patients care
  • Assess the availability of point-of-care (POC) tests, their use and their impact on antibiotic prescriptions
  • Identify barriers for an optimal use of POC biomarkers through questionnaires and interviews with clinical and laboratory staff
  • Collaborate with the microbiologist and FIND HQ team for the implementation of solutions for an optimal use of microbiology results and POC biomarkers
  • Support clinical facility for the improvement of antibiotics prescriptions
  • Implement tools such as DDD (defined daily dose) or PPS (point prevalence surveys) to monitor antibiotic prescriptions and implement corrective actions through mentoring of clinical and laboratory staff in collaboration with the FIND microbiologist
  • Collaborate with the microbiologist to improve link between laboratory clinicians’ thoughts training and implementation of tools that facilitates communication between laboratory and clinicians
  • Ensure monthly reporting of the activities

Knowledge and skill requirements

  • Internal medicine/Infectious disease medical degree or Medical degree with an extensive experience in antibiotic stewardship (antibiotic prescription)
  • 3 years’ experience in global health, AMR and antibiotic stewardship
  • 5 years’ experience in a clinical facility
  • Experience with antimicrobial use (AMU) and antimicrobial consumption (AMC) monitoring tools will be an asset
  • Work experience on implementing projects in low- and middle-income countries would be a strong preference
  • Solid organizational skills, including multitasking and time-management
  • Experience in writing technical reports
  • Interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills
  • Administrative skills and proficiency with Microsoft Office required (Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint)
  • Fluent in English (verbal and written). Knowledge of the local language is an asset
  • Enjoy working independently and as part of a team
  • Attention to detail and problem-solving skills

Nature of Appointment

  • This a full time, 1-year contract on a consultancy basis.
  • Up to 80% of national travel might be required.
