Position: Sector Officer-Market System Development

The Centre for International Studies and Cooperation (CECI) is a Canadian non-profit organization founded in 1958 in Canada. CECI is working in Nepal since the last 27 years. CECI’s mission is to combat poverty and exclusion. To this end, it builds the development capacities of local disadvantaged communities, supports peace, human rights and equity initiatives, mobilizes resources and fosters the exchange of knowledge. 

CECI for its Uniterra program invites applications from qualified candidates for the position of Sector Officer-Market System Development. This is full time position based in Kathmandu with frequent field visit.

Uniterra is a volunteer cooperation and international development program that strengthens organizations and networks by pooling expertise and knowledge. Uniterra is jointly implemented by CECI and World University Service Canada (WUSC), Uniterra supports the development of inclusive market systems in order to address the root causes of market failure and to facilitate systemic changes access to economic opportunities for women and youth.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Reporting to the Uniterra Country Coordinator, the Market System Development Officer provides support to partners and volunteers in pursuit of the Program’s target results. He/she shall be responsible for leading a process to develop and facilitate market systems in selected sub-sectors while taking care of ensuring the inclusion of women and youth. Specifically, the Market System Development Officer shall have the following major job responsibilities:
  • Coordinate the Sectoral Market System Development Research for four sub-sectors (Non Timber Forest Product, High Value Cash Crop, Dairy and Handicraft)
  • Coordinate the implementation of the women and youth inclusive market systems development approach by encouraging the full and complete involvement of partners and volunteers
  • Facilitate and coordinate the setting up of sectoral committees among partners and encourage collaboration and synergy among private sector companies, partner organizations and their members to develop market system supported by the program.
  • In close collaboration with the Recruitment Officers in Canada, develop mandates and desired volunteer profiles in line with local needs and  pool of potential Canadian volunteers. 
  • Support Senior Program Officer in timely preparation of work plans, guidelines and periodic progress reports.
  • Coordinate and provide support to partners and volunteers (i.e., training, follow-up) in developing need assessments and capacity building plans in order to identify and achieve expected results and on the development of market systems. 
  • Develop linkages with private sector companies of interest in relation to market systems.
  • Encourage the development and utilization of the sector’s best practices and, in collaboration with the Programming, Partnerships and Outreach Unit, contribute to mobilizing the contributions of partners and volunteers.
  • Support the completion of a participatory environmental impact assessment as per requirements, and the Program’s own guidelines.
  • Perform other relevant duties and responsibilities mandated by Country Coordinator of the Uniterra program

QUALIFICATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Master’s degree in economic development, business development or market systems or equivalent. 
  • Minimum of five year experience in economic development with focus on market and/or business services and entrepreneurship development. Experience in providing support to international volunteers, developing partnership and networks
  • Experience in needs analysis, capacity building and training.
  • Knowledge of national development plans and strategies in economic sector, businesses, entrepreneurship, employability, and vocational and technical training.
  • Proficiency with information technologies and computer skills.
  • Verbal and written command of Nepali and English languages
  • The ideal candidate would be energetic, flexible and adaptable in their approach and have excellent communication skills.
