MERCY CORPS OVERVIEW

Mercy Corps is an international, non-governmental humanitarian relief and development agency that exists to alleviate suffering, poverty and oppression by helping people to build secure, productive and just communities. Mercy Corps was established in 1979, and has worked in over 100 countries. Mercy Corps began its operation in Nepal in 2005, with projects focusing on the sectors of economic and food security; climate, natural resource and disaster risk management; youth engagement; with the inclusion of women and disadvantaged groups as important cross-cutting themes throughout each intervention area. Mercy Corps Nepal works to build the absorptive, adaptive and transformative potential of vulnerable individuals and communities across Nepal. The goal is attained through a systems based approach to market development, financial services, disaster risk reduction, climate change adaptation and youth engagement.

Since December 2015, Mercy Corps has been implementing a Margaret A. Cargill Foundation funded program, entitled “Building Resilience through Integration of Gender and Empowerment (BRIGE)” through integrating gendered activities in two existing, ongoing program’s within the Mercy Corps Nepal portfolio: Earth Quake Recovery Program (ERP) in mid-east Nepal and Managing Risk through Economic Development (MRED) in far-west Nepal. BRIGE Nepal seeks to empower women and youth as agents of resilience, thereby increasing the coping capacities of households and communities to manage the impacts of recurring disasters, slow-onset crises, climate change, and poor governance.

In addition to providing technical and capacity building support to the two existing programs in Gender Equality and Social Inclusion (GESI), BRIGE is also implementing activities towards empowerment of women and marginalized communities in the MRED and ERP districts.
