Protection Officer

Place of assignment: Kathmandu with frequent field travel to districts including Gorkha, Sindhupalchowk, Dhading, Rasuwa, Nuwakot

Reporting to: Project Manager

Starting date:  April 2017

People in Need (PIN) is an international non – governmental organization with headquarters in Prague, the Czech Republic. In its 20 years of history, PIN was working in over 40 countries in relief, development and human rights and democracy support projects. People in Need is a member of the Alliance 2015 – European NGO Network. For more information visit www.peopleinneed.cz. After the earthquake in Nepal in April 2015, PIN joined the emergency response to support the most affected communities in Nepal.

Protection Officer will complete primarily field-based activities for People in Need (PIN)’s “Durable Solutions to Displacement from Earthquakes in Nepal” project. S/he will ensure effective and timely coordination with project team, local stakeholders, and partners for all aspects of the project. S/he will report directly to PIN’s Project Manager based in Kathmandu.

Tasks and responsibilities:

  • Conduct, monitor and support protection program implementation in displacement sites in Gorkha, Sindhupalchowk, Dhading, Rasuwa, Nuwakot.
  • Identify vulnerable individuals, communities and households, conduct protection assessments and data collection.
  • Mobilize or facilitate formation of safety committees in displacement sites.
  • Provide training to committees on protection and displacement topics.
  • Support the committee in developing SGBV referral mechanism, committees’ capacity building
  • Monitor the committees’ mechanisms functionality and availability to the site residents
  • Monitor protection situation in projects sites, identify and immediately communicate needs and gaps in service provisions.
  • Support committee in adequately addressing and mitigating the risks
  • Monitor security projects implemented by the committees
  • Maintain ordered project’s documentation, lists, reports, log books, according to PIN’s and donor’s requirements.
  • Complete field reports and send them to Project Manager
  • Communicate regularly with Line Manager.
  • Support PIN staff and volunteers in any activities in the field.
  • Ensure programs compliance with project proposal, donor requirements, and PIN’s internal policies and standards.
  • Monitor and evaluate the project continually to ensure quality.
  • Spend long periods of time (several weeks) in rural field sites, which may involve extensive walking.
  • Complete any other tasks as required for effect project implementation.

Your profile:

  • Bachelors degree, or secondary education with at least 1 year of relevant work experience
  • Work experience in rural and remote areas (particularly Rasuwa, Dhading, Sindhupalchowk, or Gorkha)
  • Experience with protection, social mobilisation, training facilitation and participatory methods  preferred
  • Experience with data collection preferred
  • Outstanding communication skills in order to communicate at an appropriate level with rural community members, local authorities, and PIN staff
  • Highly motivated and committed, with empathy and stress resilience
  • Fluency in written and spoken English
  • Sound knowledge of MS Word and MS Excel
  • Additional language proficiency (e.g. Gurung, Tamang, Tibetan dialects) preferred
