The International Organization for Migration is seeking qualified Nepali Nationals for the following position based in Kathmandu.

Position Title: Programme Assistant, Counter-trafficking (CT), Gender-based Violence (GBV) and Vulnerable Groups – 1 position

CLASSIFICATION: SAI, 3 months with possibility of extension, ungraded (equivalent to Grade – 5)

In response to the major humanitarian crisis caused by an earthquake in Nepal, IOM is mobilizing staff to assist the people and authorities of affected areas.

GENERAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Under the overall supervision of the Chief of Mission and the Nepal Earthquake Response Manager, and under the direct supervision of the Counter-trafficking (CT) Expert, the successful candidate will assist various tasks to be undertaken by the emergency CT team as integral part of the IOM’s humanitarian programme activities in Nepal.  

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist in the preparation and undertaking of an initial rapid assessment of Trafficking in Persons (TIP) situations in the earthquake affected areas and other at-risk locations in Nepal. This includes arranging meetings with government entities and other key CT partners, taking notes and interpreting during the meetings as needed and assisting primary data collection in the field. 
  • Support the CT expert in building firm rapport and working with key government partners and other local partners (incl. local authorities, service providers, leaders, target individuals/groups) to implement CT/GBV actions. This includes the direct liaison with such partners/stakeholders as needed and keeping them regularly updated on IOM’s emergency CT and GBV activities.  
  • Assist in the preparation and delivery of TIP sensitization sessions, workshops and trainings internally and externally. 
  • Assist in liaising with other thematic staff of the IOM’s humanitarian programme to reflect CT/GBV effectively in these thematic areas (in particular, CCCM, Shelter, Health) and plan and carry out collaborative actions. 
  • Assist in designing and carrying out CT/GBV prevention campaigns. 
  • Undertake translation of relevant documents, including IEC materials, training materials and government documents. 
  • Assist in the proposal and report writing and the preparation of other thematic documents as needed. 
  • Represent the IOM’s emergency CT team at relevant cluster meetings/ other meetings when the CT expert is unavailable. 
  • Undertake duty travels as required.
  • Such other duties as may be assigned.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND COMPETENCIES:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Social Sciences, Law or Social Work or other related field.
  • Writing skills and experience producing meeting minutes and reports, and drafting official letters. 
  • Five years of relevant experience in UN agencies/IOM and/or international/national NGO and/or government programme.
  • Extensive work experience in challenging environments and operational activities in post-disaster areas.
  • Experience of working in TIP, GBV and/or other issues concerning vulnerable migrants highly desirable.
  • Experience of working with survivors of TIP, GBV and/or other vulnerable groups desirable.   
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Willingness to travel regularly to sub offices and field sites.
  • Ability to work under extreme pressure in difficult conditions while maintaining security awareness.
  • Flexibility and focus on processes and their improvements.
  • Ability to work effectively and harmoniously with colleagues from varied cultures and professional backgrounds.
  • Stamina, determination, commitment and adaptability in the workplace are required.  
  • Languages: Fluency in Nepali and English, including excellent English writing skills.
