The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) is the world’s largest humanitarian organization, with a network of 191-member National Societies (NSs). The overall aim of IFRC is “to inspire, encourage, facilitate, and promote at all times all forms of humanitarian activities by NSs with a view to preventing and alleviating human suffering and thereby contributing to the maintenance and promotion of human dignity and peace in the world.” IFRC works to meet the needs and improve the lives of vulnerable people before, during and after disasters, health emergencies and other crises. IFRC is part of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement (Movement), together with its member National Societies and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). IFRC is led by its Secretary General, and has its Headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland. The Headquarters are organized into three main Divisions: (i) National Society Development and Operations Coordination; (ii) Global Relations, Humanitarian Diplomacy and Digitalization; and (iii) Management Policy, Strategy and Corporate Services. Inclusive DRR Officer
Job purpose
In partnership with American Red Cross (ARC) and with support from the Anne Ray Charitable Trust (ARCT), Nepal Red Cross Society (NRCS) is implementing Mahakali River Inclusive Community Based Disaster Risk Reduction (CBDRR) Project from July 1, 2017 through June 30, 2019. The goal of the project is to strengthen the capacity of vulnerable communities living in the lower portions of the Mahakali River basin, particularly marginalized groups and persons with disabilities (PWD), to better manage and respond to risks posed by natural hazards.
The Mahakali River Project will focus on multiple hazards identified in the communities (floods, landslides, earthquakes, fires and cold waves) by strengthening inclusive disaster preparedness and response readiness capacities of the Nepal Red Cross Society (NRCS) and the communities, as well as improving school disaster safety. The project will be implemented in high flood risk areas within the districts of Kanchanpur and Dadeldhura.
In order to ensure that gender equity and inclusion (GESI) considerations and principles are integrated in all aspects of project design and delivery, including meaningful participation and addressing the needs of marginalized groups and persons with disabilities, American Red Cross (ARC) is seeking an experienced Inclusive DRR Officer to provide technical inputs and work closely with NRCS staff to achieve inclusion mainstreaming.
The Inclusive DRR Officer will be based in the field, at one of the NRCS offices in Kanchanpur or Dadeldhura. The position will report directly to the Senior Program Officer in charge of the Mahakali River Project
