Job Description of Head Waitress

A head waitress is an important role for the success of Sisters Café. The head waitress is in charge of café service. As a head waitress you will take on three important roles:  team management, customer service and café marketing.

TEAM MANAGEMENT

1. Training for waitressing apprentices:

The head waitress will be in charge of training the waitressing apprentices. This includes:

  • Helping the apprentices learn required English skills to aid their connection with customers
  • Coffee training
  • Service training
  • Fast and efficient service
  • Cleaning requirements
  • Warm and welcoming customer service skills
  • Monitoring your team’s performance 
  • Develop methods for order taking (e.g. waitresses to focus on serving ground floor or second floor etc.), communication of order to the kitchen staff and other necessary processes

2. Communication

As a head waitress, you will be responsible to the business manager. This will include working with the business manager to:

  • Coordinate employee roster
  • Assign servers to tables 
  • Call in additional help when necessary
  • Help with hiring and training waitressing staff
  • Calculating the cash drawer at the end of the day: counting cash at the end of the shift, filling out reports for the business management and other duties as they arise.

You will also be in charge of the well being of your waitressing apprentices. This includes:

  • Regularly checking on the well being of your team members
  • Ensuring the apprentices arrive and leave the café on time (in regards to their shift)
  • Discuss any issues to do with the well being of apprentices with the business manager, when required

3. Shift Preparation

  • Before service begins, it’s your duty to meet with kitchen staff and head chef to discuss:
  • The menu: specials that are offered for the day and which menu items may/may not be available
  • Resolve any service issues that are raised by the kitchen staff and/or head chef

CUSTOMER SERVICE

1. Service 

You are in charge of your waitressing apprentices, but you will still operate in a waitressing role, working with the customers at Sisters Cafe. This role includes:

  • Ensure customers needs are met
  • Make coffees & drinks when needed

Address any customer complaints: seek to resolve complaints with humility and ensure that customers leave your establishment satisfied. Call on the business manager or head chef if issue is too hard for you to handle. 
Greet customers, take orders, explain menu specials, relay orders to kitchen staff and preparing garnishes. 
Ensure tables are clean and contribute to other necessary cleaning

HEAD WAITRESS POSITION DETAILS

Working hours: 

  • 7 hrs a day, 6 days of the week. Hours are negotiable with the business manager
  • Lunch is provided for staff on your working days

PAY DETAILS:

Probation payment: 20,000 per month (working at 42 hr week). Probation period is for 3 months. 

Monthly payment: 25,000R (working a 42 hr week) after probation period.  

Working hours are negotiable with the business manager.
