Job Description of GESI Specialist

Position: GESI Specialist 

Duration: Initial for one year with a possibility of extension

Location: Kathmandu with frequent field visit

Reporting: Projects Team Leader 

BACKGROUND:

The Centre for International Studies and Cooperation (CECI) is an international non-governmental organization which works in more than 15 countries in Africa, Asia, Latin America and Eastern Europe. CECI is working in Nepal for last 30 years. CECI’s mission is to combat poverty and exclusion. To this end, it builds the development capacities of local disadvantaged communities, supports peace, human rights and equity initiatives, mobilizes resources and fosters the exchange of knowledge. 

CECI is preparing to implement two new projects on Governance (SUSASAN) and Long-term recovery programming with the funding support of Canadian Government (Global Affairs Canada–GAC). The SUSASAN project aims at increasing empowerment of women and men, girls and boys, and marginalized groups, to engage and participate in democratic processes equitably and inclusively, to enjoy and exercise their human rights through increased access to and use of integrated technologies in governance. While, the long-term recovery program will work to promote livelihood, enterprises and skill development in earthquake affected districts. These projects will be implemented in seven districts i.e. Sindhupalchok, Kavrepalanchok, Lalitpur, Kailali, Dadeldhura, Achham and Bajhang. 

Mandate and job summary:

The GESI Specialist will work in close coordination with the Team Leaders and team members of SUSASAN and Long-term recovery project, national and local stakeholders and implementing partners. S/he will be responsible for developing and implementing GESI framework in the projects and implementing partners to ensure the meaningful involvement and active participation of target groups (women and marginalized groups-WMG).  S/he is required to enhance the capacity of project partners and also ensures that their reporting system is aligned to track GESI data and information. S/he will develop measureable indicators to monitor gender equity and social inclusion in the projects and work with MEL Specialist to integrate those with project monitoring and information system. The GESI Specialist should also be supporting to mainstream GESI in CECI work including for the achievement of gender equity and social inclusion strategies of CECI Nepal.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Prepare GESI mainstreaming strategy and promote GESI through project interventions.
  • Support in mainstreaming GESI perspective in projects planning, implementation, monitoring and reporting.
  • Design, plan, implement and coordinate all GESI related activities.
  • Assess GESI practices of partners and provide capacity building support to integrate GESI programmatically and institutionally. 
  • Support to develop GESI related training curriculum and materials. 
  • Sensitize stakeholders, project team and implementing partners on GESI and help them to internalize GESI friendly practices.
  • Support in integrating GESI indicators in project monitoring and reporting systems.
  • Undertake GESI impact analysis of the project activities and prepare related case studies and reports.
  • Prepare communication materials to sensitize community and stakeholders on GESI. 
  • Coordinate with different level of governmental and non-governmental institutions and stakeholders to promote GESI.
  • Assist Team Leaders and project team members in all the necessary aspects to ensure effective targeting, gender mainstreaming and inclusion of women, the poor and marginalized groups.
  • Work with the MEL Specialist to develop and collect GESI disaggregated data and analyze, as required. 

QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCES:

  • At least Master degree in Gender Studies, Social Science or related field.
  • Minimum 5 year experience as GESI Officer in development projects. Knowledge and experience in developing gender and social inclusion focused training modules and organizing training programmes will be an advantage.
  • Demonstrated attention to detail, ability to follow procedures, meet deadlines and work independently and cooperatively with team members. 
  • Fluency in written and spoken English and Nepali required. Knowledge of local language is an advantage. 
  • Demonstrated ability to work in complex environments under tight deadlines. 
  • Prior experience of working in governance / accountability would be assets.
