Field Researcher/Translator

TRANSCULTURAL PSYCHOSOCIAL ORGANIZATION (TPO) NEPAL is a leading NGO, established in 2005,working on psychosocial and mental health research, intervention design and implementation, capacity building and service provision.

TPO-Nepal announces two openings for positions as a research assistant and translator for two research projects.

Project 1: The research intends to study the attitude and perception towards misuse of alcohol in Kathmandu and surrounding areas. Open to both male and female.

The position is full time for approximately 3 months with start date from 1st of June, 2015. The position is based predominantly in Kathmandu with an estimated 25% time commitment for travel around the valley. The selected candidate will work closely with the research focal person and will independently/jointly conduct following activities:-

  • Setting up meetings for interviews with research participants.
  • Conducting, facilitating and on-site translation of all interviews (from Nepali to English and vice versa) with the participants which includes health care workers, counselors, law enforcement, and members of community groups.
  • Written translation of some of the interviews.
  • Translation of research instruments (English to Nepali)
  • Providing logistical support for communication, printing, photocopying, and local purchases for research team.
  • Abiding by ethical conduct in a nature compliant with research human subjects protection and TPO professionalism.

Project 2: The research intends to study the feasibility and acceptability of a culturally adapted suicide and self-harm intervention for school-going adolescents. Open to females only.

The position is full time for approximately 3 months with start date from 1st of June, 2015. The position is based predominantly in Kathmandu with an estimated 30% time commitment for travel outside valley. The selected candidate will work closely with the research focal person and will independently/jointly conduct following activities:-

  • Translation of all training and treatment materials (English to Nepali)
  • Scheduling and coordinating intake meetings, mental health assessments, and interviews for all study participants over a 2-month period
  • Coordinating of all research activities in Kathmandu and surrounding areas
  • Electronic transcription and translation of all interviews and treatment sessions
  • Providing logistical support for communication, printing, photocopying, and local purchases for research team
  • Abiding by appropriate ethical conduct in a nature compliant with research human subjects protection and TPO professionalism

The required competencies for both the post includes:-

  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
  • Proficiency in interview translation (Nepali-English and English-Nepali)
  • Proficiency in written translation (Nepali-English and English-Nepali)
  • Proficiency in typing (English& Nepali – Preeti, Shreenath Bold font).
  • Proficiency in using basic office package – Microsoft Word, Excel.
  • Experience with qualitative analysis software (Preferred, but not required)
  • Completion of a bachelor’s degree in related field (individuals with a Master’s degree will be given preference)
  • Excellent interpersonal, time management, and organizational skills

Prior experience in research, especially qualitative methods and working with the aforementioned population and vulnerable group, is preferred. In addition, the applicant should have an interest in mental health and psychosocial issues. Prior experience with qualitative software such as NVivo is preferred but not required. Preference will be given to candidates who have completed a Master’s degree in health or social science field. Salary will depend on prior research experience and level of education completed.
