Our technical staff on the ground now includes physicians, nurses, surgeons, as well as specialists in water, sanitation and hygiene, mental health and psycho-social support and nutrition.

Summary Duties and Responsibilities

  • As part of the International Medical Corps (IMC), WASH operational areas, the WASH Engineer will be in charge of all technical activities related to construction and will ensure the efficient and smooth implementation of the WASH projects in IMC targeted areas.
  • To develop a plan for improving the WASH infrastructure at the health posts, schools and communities based on assessments carried out by partner NGOs and to prioritize the WASH activities according to urgency Coordinate with WASH field staff to ensure that the various aspects of the WASH response are integrated.

INFORMATION MANAGEMENT

  • Plan and carry out needs assessments, baseline studies and periodic studies, and feedback findings to communities so as to enable communities to find solutions to WASH-related problems.
  • Collate data from the communities and local partners and prepare regular reports for submission to WASH Manager
  • Liaise with community leaders and other sectors and agencies working locally in order to coordinate within the WASH sector. This includes taking notes regularly at every meeting with the beneficiaries on field and report as needed
  • Keep proper records of field expenditures when appropriate and report on these to the WASH Manager

IMPLEMENTATION

  • Implement effectively and within time and budget WASH program as per the project proposals and project requirements. 
  • Develop and review project designs to ensure compliance with relevant standards, procedures, and codes.
  • Develop and review BOQs and technical specifications
  • Ensure that accurate and detailed records of project matters are formulated and kept.
  • Conduct site assessments and surveys.
  • Ensure as far as possible the security of the project, of staff, and of equipment.
  • Coordinate with beneficiary leaders to ensure community participation and ownership.
  • Advise on procurement needs and submit all procurement request to the WASH Manager
  • Provide on-site technical assistance to contractors or service providers and beneficiaries during the process of implementation, including management of construction activities.
  • Prepare and submit regular progress reports and work plans to the WASH Manager
  • Carry out other related tasks as directed by the line management.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s Degree in engineering field (Civil, Environmental, Water or Public Health Engineering) relevant to WASH projects
  • WASH experience in a development, emergency or post-disaster setting with a good understanding of water (especially water networks, gravity flow systems), sanitation and/ or solid waste management
  • More than two (2) years’ experiences in water and sanitation projects with NGO and/or INGO.
  • Experience in WASH/environmental health related training/mentorship/programme development
  • Excellent understanding of low cost and environment friendly sanitation.
  • Good experience of conflict management at field level.
  • Knowledge of English and local dialect.
  • Have excellent understanding of technical drawings.
