Collective Campaign for Peace (COCAP)

Collective Campaign for Peace (COCAP) is a national network of peace and human rights non-governmental organizations in Nepal. It started as a loose, informal forum in June 2001 and was registered with the government of Nepal as a nonprofit and non-political network in December 2002. Currently, COCAP has 43 member organizations. It has a secretariat in each of the provinces. It has a large number of volunteers who actively involve themselves in the various aspects of its works. COCAP aims to provide a common space for its members, volunteers and friends to collectively engage in the pursuit of peace, human rights and justice in Nepal. It organizes national/provincial level campaigns and programs on the issues of conflict transformation and peace building, transitional justice and social security/protection in coordination with its member organizations and other like-minded organizations.

Training and Outreach Officer for NepalMonitor.org initiative with Collective Campaign for Peace (COCAP) in Kathmandu

Post Title: Training and Outreach Officer (female only)

Duration: Initial contract until Dec. 2017 - extension intended, depending on agreement   for 2nd phase of contract.

Salary: 34, 240 NPR per months 

Duty Station: Kathmandu with frequent field visits across Nepal  

NepalMonitor.org is a COCAP protection and conflict prevention initiative, supported by Peace Brigades International (pbi). Originally developed by pbi, it is an innovative tool for the protection of Human Rights Defenders (HRDs) at risk. Using latest ICT-tools, NepalMonitor.org alerts local organizations in Nepal to human rights and security incidents in their area, and allows anyone to easily share incidents with local, national and international organizations. Contributors and users create a community and engage in cooperative action to protect themselves from human rights abuses and other security threats.

COCAP is recruiting a Training and Outreach Officer to support its Outreach and Training Program for NepalMonitor.org and conduct trainings on security for Human Rights Defenders in the field. As a majority of work will be with Women Human Rights Defenders who work on sensitive topics, COCAP is looking for qualified female candidates only.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Support outreach for the NepalMonitor.org system, conduct trainings for Human Rights Defenders (HRDs), follow-up on protection cases and support the Nepal Monitor Project in creating a community that effectively engages in joint activities to protect and promote human rights crossing societal divisions.
  • Assist on outreach activities in cooperation with the Nepal Monitor Project Coordinator and the Training & Outreach Coordinator
  • Assist in conducting trainings on how to use the NepalMonitor.org system and security for HRDs in the field and manage its preparation and logistics
  • Support the Training & Outreach Coordinator in communication and maintaining relationship with HRDs and journalists in the field
  • Assist in the set-up and facilitation & accompaniment of a peer learning approach for Women Human Rights Defenders
  • Assist in the development of schedules, manuals and dissemination material for training on HRD related topics
  • Assist in the development of public relations material
  • Extensive travels throughout the country, including remote areas, to strengthen the Nepal Monitor network, with and without the Training & Outreach Coordinator (approximately 1/3 of the working time will be in the field) 
  • Take notes and draft minutes and training reports in Nepali and English
  • The Training and Outreach Officer will work closely with the, Nepal Monitor Project Coordinator and Training & Outreach Coordinator in all areas of work
  • Conduct further duties as  assigned by the line manager

Qualifications and Experience

  • Minimum Bachelor’s degree or comparable in social work/social sciences, human rights law, journalism, adult education or other relevant fields and at least 2 years of work experience in relevant field(s), this includes experience with field trips within Nepal
  • Interested in protection and security management, especially related to HRDs and WHRDs
  • Interested in the usage of ICT tools
  • Experience in conducting trainings
  • Knowledge of the human rights situation in Nepal, and ability to effectively conduct spoken and written human rights discourses using both English and Nepali terminology
  • Fluency in English and Nepali; speaking, reading and writing
  • Proficiency in entry of Unicode and/or Preeti Nepali text
  • Willingness and ability  to abide by strict security protocols, including the use of security software, and commitment to  respect the confidentiality of PBI, COCAP, and all of their contacts
  • Ability  to work in a complex political and sociocultural environment and openness  and ability to do extensive trips, including to remote areas
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills and ability to work as part of a team
  • Microsoft Office skills
  • Citizen of Nepal
