Position: Shelter and WASH Advisor

Location: Kathmandu, Nepal with frequent field trips

Duration: 3 Months

Reports to: Emergency Response Team Leader

Position Summary:

The Advisor is responsible for managing an emergency shelter and WASH program for earthquake affected people in Nepal. This position is based in Kathmandu with travel by air or road to the districts.

Note: hiring for this position is dependent upon receiving donor funding.

Position Responsibilities and Duties:

  • In close collaboration with partners, prepare and manage all project activities and make sure the activities meet project’s objectives.
  • Design and recommend shelter / WASH solutions
  • Ensure that project activities are designed and implemented with active participation and involvement of partners, community members, and that beneficiary selection and project implementation is transparent.
  • Coordinate with partners, local authorities, and community authorities and obtain MOUs.
  • Closely coordinate all project activities with RI’s team (logistic, finance, HR, security).
  • In conjunction with the project team, prepare a work plan and budget projections for approval by line manager.       
  • Ensure keeping of accurate and well-ordered records, including signed training participant records, handover records for any assets, community agreements, photos of completed assets, etc.
  • Ensure a sound monitoring plan is developed and M&E system is set and in place.
  • Prepare internal weekly, monthly progress reports, and donor report, and monitor the project budget.
  • Monitor project activities through field visits and meetings with field staff, community members, and authorities.
  • Report any community and implementation problems to the team leader.
  • Ensure project activities are carried out in accordance with RI policies, local laws, and donor regulations.
  • Ensure a culture of participation and learning amongst project staff.
  • Accomplish other tasks defined by and agreed with the team leader.

Qualifications & Requirements:

  • Engineering degree preferred.
  • Min. Bachelor degree but Master’s degree preferred.
  • At least 4 years of experience in NGO project management.
  • Experience implementing shelter and WASH programming is required.
  • Strong leadership and teambuilding skills, staff management and capacity building experience.
  • Highly organized with logistical planning, coordination and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience implementing ECHO funded projects is preferred.
  • Afghanistan experience is preferred.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English.
  • Must be computer literate: using word and excel, as well as email
  • Ability to meet deadlines.
