SCOPE OF WORK

Background:

International Medical Corps Nepal is supporting the Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal’s health-sector response to the earthquake of April 25, 2015, and the subsequent aftershocks, by implementing various programs in health-system strengthening, health post reconstruction, disability prevention through the provision of physiotherapy and orthopedic services, water sanitation and hygiene (WASH), nutrition, reproductive health, mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS), and gender-based violence program in twelve earthquake-affected districts of Nepal.

Disasters have tendency to leave many with physical injuries like fracture, spinal cord injury, head injury, who will be needing short and long term rehabilitation depending upon the severity of the condition. The earthquake of 2015 resulted in massive loss of life and injuries in Nepal. In Gorkha district alone, a total of 443 people died and 1179 were injured as result of the Gorkha 2015 Earthquake (Health Sector PDNA, GON 2015). To address the need of the rehabilitative health care services for preventing injury and disability among earthquake affected population, International Medical Corps established and operated the first ever physiotherapy step-down facility in Gorkha district with in the premises of Gorkha District Hospital (GDH) on June 2015. In addition, IMC provides basic orthopedic services in Gorkha District Hospital through monthly orthopedic camps where patients are benefited by the provision of orthopedic consultation, medicine, nursing care, physiotherapy, assistive/mobility devices, minor surgeries, casting, psychological support and inpatient visit by orthopedic doctors. Minor surgeries are also conducted through the utilization of resources set up including the Operation Theater of GDH. Clients needing further physiotherapy services are enrolled for follow in the physiotherapy step down unit and if needs further consultation are again appointed in next orthopedic camp.

It is in this context, International Medical Corps is looking forward to hire two external consultant orthopedic surgeons to who will lead and operate the biweekly orthopedic camps in the premises of Gorkha District Hospital. The position will require to travel to Gorkha twice a month to operate two days of orthopedic camp.

Objective:

The major objective of this assignment is to provide orthopedic services to the beneficiaries visiting physiotherapy facility located in Gorkha District Hospital. This will include guidance to the team consisting of physiotherapist and nurses; and providing consultations, referrals and liaisons with tertiary health centers for necessary treatment.
The position will require to travel to Gorkha every month to operate two days of orthopedic camp effective until the end of March 2017.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • 1.  Participate on general orthopedic camp together with the multidisciplinary team comprised of Physiotherapists and Nurses of International Medical Corps based at Gorkha district hospital.
  • 2.    Act as the team leader to support physiotherapists and nurses in a clinical goal setting and decision making of the client attending the orthopedic camp.
  • 3.  Consultation for outpatients and inpatients for earthquake injured and many other acute and chronic orthopedic cases in Gorkha district hospital.
  • 4.    Provide minor corrective surgery services in coordination with Gorkha District Hospital.
  • 5.    Screening for orthopedic surgery and liaison with tertiary hospitals if referral has to be made for intermediate and major surgeries.
  • 6. Support International Medical Corps in developing a sustainable referral mechanism by providing expert support and assistance through networking, and linkages with tertiary health service providers.

Expected Output and Deliverables:

•   Completion of 2 orthopedic camps every month.
•   Documentation of number of beneficiaries provided with orthopedic services.
•   Summary report of achievement after each orthopedic camp which should at least include:

– Number of people served,
–  Disaggregation of specialized services e.g. basic surgery, orthopedic casting, etc.
–  Referred for tertiary center.

Minimum Education and Qualification:

•    At least 2-5 years’ experience as an orthopedic surgeon in a tertiary hospital.
•    Experience in operating the chronic and neglected case will be an asset.
•    Experience on corrective surgeries/procedures.
•    Experience working with I/NGO related to rehabilitation of people with injuries &   disabilities (preferred).

  • The camps will be organized during the working days as per the calendar of Nepal Government so Consultants should be willing and available to operate camps during the work days.
  • International Medical Corps will be responsible for travel (to and from) Gorkhaand accommodation in Gorkha during the camp days. All other expenses (meals, refreshment etc.) will be consultant’s sole responsibility.
