ORGANIZATION PROFILE:

Media Advocacy Group (MAG) is a non-governmental organization (NGO) established in 2008 by a group of experts in the domain of media, advocacy & management. MAG was established particularly to support endeavors in promoting and maintaining democracy and freedom. MAG hopes to achieve this through advocacy, capacity development and awareness raising particularly through media mobilization to surface issues to broader concern. Our activities mostly target people from different communities ranging from grassroots to national levels.

MAG project intervention covers all 75 districts of Nepal. The main stakeholders of our work is general public, professional women, organizations and experts in field of media, civil and political rights and policy makers. Media organizations are important means for reaching our effort to target audiences. MAG focuses on surfacing grass root issues to be captured in major policy discourses.

PROJECT BACKGROUND:

The consortium of Nepal National Dalit Social Welfare Organization (NNDSWO), Media Advocacy Group (MAG) and Finn Church Aid (FCA) are going to implement SAJHA AAWAZ Project with the main financial support of European Union and co-finance of FCA for three years in five districts of Nepal (i.e. Kalikot, Jajarkot, Surkhet, Mahottari and Siraha). The project aims at creating enabling environment to caste-based discrimination (CBD) affected people to restore their dignity and enjoy rights to non-discrimination. It builds solidarity of wider communities against CBD, and for implementation of laws and policies. It contributes for strengthening democratic institutions at local level. The project also aims to promote partnership at local level for economic rights of target groups.

Media Advocacy Group (MAG) will play vital role to surface the issues of caste based discrimination and affected people through media based policy advocacy and campaigns. It will also facilitate for explorative journalism on the issue.

PURPOSE:

Ensures planning and coordination within organization and support for coordination with media at national and local level and support on issue based explorative journalism so as to collectively contribute for achieving desired changes through SAJHA AAWAZ Project.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead project team within MAG and ensures planning, budgeting and coordination within organization
  • Ensure project action plan are detailed out and executed accordingly in timely manner
  • Facilitate to design curriculum for issues based explorative journalism trainings by properly following training cycle management,
  • Facilitate media dialogues on CBD issues with policy makers, NHRIs and CSO actors at national level
  • Develop tools for capturing the changes through media advocacy and campaign related activities of the project
  • Ensure all compliances of EU grant contract and of nation laws are properly fulfilled
  • Ensure periodic progress reports (narrative and financial) are produced in good quality and EU standard and submitted to lead partner and within organizational system
  • Ensure good coordination and communication with consortium members
  • Perform other roles to achieve the project objective as well as governance of the organization.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Completed Bachelor's Degree in journalism, management or related disciplines; and have five years work experience on the project management or Master degree with 3 years of experience
  • Strong experience in project cycle management
  • Planning and budgeting skills
  • Proven experience in media based research, training management on human rights and advocacy.
  • Good presentation, communication and facilitation skills
  • Knowledge of rights-based approach and past experience in EC funded projects will be advantages.
  • Good communication skills, team-work oriented and able to work in a multicultural environment

The position is a fixed-term contract starting after 15 December 2017 to till project period for 34 months. The benefits of the position will be as per MAG's HR practice and policy. The position is based in MAG Central Office in Kathmandu with frequent travels to the project districts.
