Position Summary

RTI's International Education Division is supporting education development around the world by strengthening education policy, management and practice in order to achieve measurable improvement in teaching and learning. From our well-established reputation in education system strengthening, to innovative work in early grade assessment and learning, RTI is improving education quality, relevance and efficiency through implementation of projects funded by USAID, DFID, Australian Aid and other donors and clients.

The International Education Division is currently accepting applications for Materials Development Specialist for an anticipated USAID-funded five-year project to improve early grade readingin Nepal. This is a full-time position with residency in Nepal serving as the technical lead for teaching and learning materials and curricula development in Nepali, Awadhi, Tharu, and Maithili (and other languages as required) for grades 1, 2 and 3. S/he will work closely with technical experts in Nepali and early grade learning to ensure that materials (including teacher manuals, pupil primers, books and other materials) are developed in accordance with the projects needs and specifications. S/he will collaborate with the MOE’s Curriculum Development Centre (CDC) to update and validate learning materials for early NEGRP-supported reading material, all NEGRP-supported trainings in reading, all teacher and classroom supervision and monitoring and all student testing efforts.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Design the plan and oversee the review of existing curriculumand materials as well as curriculum revision as needed, in collaboration with CDC personnel.
  • Develop capacity of local RTI staff members and ministry collaborators in reading curriculum and materials development.
  • Support the development of training, planning, and materials to ensure direct linkage with curriculum as well as the appropriate use of instructional materials.
  • Provide input and support to teacher training in early grade reading and the development of monitoring and classroom assessment tools. 
  • Contribute to content development for various assessments to be used during the program implementation.
  • Work with partners and government agencies in current and additional districts to replicate the approach to the development of scopes and sequences for different languages, development of stories, training on the publishing software use, and other efforts related to curriculum development, teacher training, and assessment of student progress. 
  • Contribute to quarterly and annual reports, presentations to USAID, Ministry, and other development partners, and other reports as needed. 

Required Skills and Qualifications:

  • A master’s degree or higher in education or a related field.
  • Nine years of relevant field experience in educational development, with specific experience in primary-level reading programs and instructional materials/curriculum development, teacher training, and literacy improvement.
  • Experience in meaningful collaboration with government and ministry counterparts, and local capacity development.
  • Strong oral/written communication skills.
  • Fluency in English and Nepali.
