Help-Hilfe zur Selbsthilfe e.V. (meaning help for self-reliance), hereinafter Help, is a German based non-political, non-sectarian, non-governmental, non-profit making humanitarian organization founded in 1981. In line with its principle of assisting people towards self-reliance, Help works together with people in need, irrespective of their gender, age, political views or religious beliefs, by providing immediate aid in the aftermath of disasters and by making sustainable contributions to reconstruction and rehabilitation efforts in all areas of life. Help’s underlying long-term objective is to reduce the vulnerability of communities to new conflicts or extreme natural disasters. People and the preservation of human dignity are the focus of everything Help does.

Details / requirements:

Help – Hilfe zur Selbsthilfe, a German non-governmental organisation providing worldwide humanitarian assistance and development aid since more than 30 years, has been part of the post-earthquake emergency response in Nepal and is now planning to further expand its assistance programme in Sindhupalchowk, supporting public infrastructure reconstruction and housing, WASH, DRR and livelihoods activities. To this intent, the organization is seeking an efficient, motivated and experienced to fill the position of Field Engineer.

Field Engineer - 1 

Based in Thulosirubari, Sindhupalchok

Scope of the position: Under the direction of the Senior Field Engineer, the Field Engineer will be responsible for the engineering and construction processes and management embedded in the project activities, including but not limited to, the reconstructions and rehabilitation of schools and water schemes and the organisation of masons training. 

Main Responsibilities / Duties

  • Know perfectly, respect, and ensure strict compliance with the National Building Code and earthquake resistant techniques.
  • Prepare technical drawing, Bill of Quantities, cost estimates, technical specifications, working method related for each projects.
  • Monitor, supervise and inspect construction sites ensuring compliance to construction standards and technical requirements
  • Ensure project documentation of each activities
  • Assure timely reporting on progress and challenges as per organization’s needs
  • Monitor construction works undertaken by contractors and/or partner agencies to ensure that the structures comply with quality standards and approved designs
  • Liaise with relevant local authorities, community leaders, CBOs, and other relevant stakeholders to ensure good coordination and proper and timely execution of planned activities
  • Other duties as assigned.

Skills and qualification

  • Bachelor’s Degree in civil engineering with a minimum of 3 years of working experience. 
  • Minimum 2 year experience in design, project preparation, cost estimate, site supervision of building’s construction projects, shelter and social infrastructure construction projects
  • Experience in management of contractors, supervising construction and infrastructure works.
  • Strong ability in civil engineering designs and drawings
  • Excellent knowledge on structural engineering calculation, construction cost estimate, bill of quantity, tender process. 
  • Working experience with INGO or international donors will be an asset 
  • Sound knowledge of earthquake resilient building features
  • Good knowledge of Excel, and technical drawing software (Autocad). 
  • Flexibility, resourcefulness and good communication skills.
  • Strong written and spoken English skills report writing, presentation and inter personnel communication
  • Advanced computer literacy and proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel in particular). Knowledge on MS-Project is an asset.
  • Willing to work in humanitarian programmes and to travel to remote & difficult areas
  • Ability to facilitate trainings and workshops for technical staff, artisan and community members

Contract duration: 3 months with the possibility of extention.
