VSO is the world’s leading independent international development organization that works through volunteers. VSO Nepal has worked in Nepal since 1964 to improve the lives of impoverished people in some of the country’s poorest districts.

VSO Nepal, in coordination with VSO UK and Bhimpokhara Youth Club (BYC) and Sarbodaya Sewashram as implementing partners in Baglung and Lamjung respectively,is implementing the International Citizen Service (ICS) programme which promotes intercultural dialogue, sharing and learning between young people from the UK and Nepal. It gives 18-25 year olds the chance to spend three months in a community to help make a difference in the lives of disadvantaged people.

Community Action Learner

We are looking for 36 committed, enthusiastic and open minded young Nepalese (aged 18-25) to be part of the programme. We aim to maintain a ratio of 70:30 (female to male) among the selected candidates. This programme is focused on Sexual Reproductive Health awareness among children, young people, and community women. There is also the opportunity to learn about education, and livelihoods: Action learners will live in host homes and will live and work with a UK counterpart.

During this action, the young people will spend 12 weeks in Baglung and/or Lamjung, Nepal and will live, learn and work together with their fellow UK youth.Through living and learning alongside communities, the youth gain firsthand knowledge and experience of good practice in development work and are in turn, able to make practical and meaningful contributions to the communities in whith they undergo action learning. Action learners will live in host homes in village communities, sometimes quite remote, and conditions will be basic—this is a really good opportunity to learn about rural development in Nepal.

Requirements:

  • Intermediate (10+2) level of education in any discipline (bachelor preferred)
  • Good English language skill
  • Strong Interpersonal skill (working with other stakeholders in the community, and people from different culture, caste and ethnicity)
  • Commitment for development work and can lead by example for youth and the communities (sensitive to others’ need)
  • Strong commitment to complete the entire cycle of exchange (mid November 2014- to end mid February 2015)

Action Learner Team Leader

We are looking for 6 committed young Nepalese (aged 23 plus) Team Leaders who will contribute to the delivery of the ICS project, support VSO CS action learners (both Nepalese and the UK)and build on their own personal and professional development. They will be based in pairs in the communities alongside the action learners ( also living in host homes), and their role will be to support and lead the team, visiting volunteers indifferent villages, supporting them to understand their aims and to implement these in community, to take a lead role in monitoring and reporting for the project. Team Leaders will support up to 24 UK youth and National volunteers, and be supported themselves by a VSO Project Co-coordinator. This will be a very strong opportunity for Team Leaders to develop their leadership and project management skills.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor level of education with strong facilitation, communication and interpersonal skills
  • Fluent written and spoken English.
  • A full commitment for at least 16 weeks (32 weeks preferred) from the 1st of November 2014.
  • Experience of working and supporting young people from varying backgrounds (cross-culture environment)
  • Ability to demonstrate leadership qualities and able to plan logically, managing a varied workload and working environment;
